Child combat sports safety in Brussels

Contact, protective equipment, supervision and the right to stop: practical questions for parents before a child’s combat sports class in Brussels.

A serious club does not promise zero risk. Ask how it manages age-appropriate teaching, progression, partner control and a child saying stop. Gloves cannot replace a clear instruction or a partner who can control a movement.
The American Academy of Pediatrics’ parent guide (16 May 2025) recommends starting with non-contact skills. It generally discourages MMA for young participants because of serious injury risks. A “Junior MMA” label alone does not establish suitability: ask about the actual activities, prohibited techniques and contact rules. Protective equipment does not make concussion impossible.
For a first trial at Davinci Fighting, equipment is available to borrow. Bring sportswear and water, keep nails short, and tell the coach about relevant restrictions before starting. Watch whether the coach interrupts excessive intensity, explains start and stop signals and responds calmly to questions. Fatigue is a reason to adjust, not to prove courage.
This is a parent checklist, not a medical clearance or a description of every club protocol. Ask a qualified healthcare professional about injury, persistent pain, concussion or medical restrictions before resuming. The ADEPS sports ethics framework places children’s safety and integrity first.

Your first trial class is free. Come and meet the coach, observe the session and let your child form an opinion.
